Yesterday, Nick Clegg, our Deputy Prime Minister, announced that a bill would be moved in Parliament to hold a referendum on electoral reform on 5th May 2011. This is the same date as the next local elections in our area.
The reforms will be a step towards proportional representation, although the Alternative Vote method proposed is not itself proportional. However, the introduction of AV will ensure that the elected MP has the support of at least half of the voters within the seat. At the same time, boundaries will be redrawn to ensure that the reduced number of parliamentary seats have approximately the same number of electors.
Of the five constituencies covered by the Rotherham & Barnsley party, only John Healey in Wentworth & Dearne would have been certain of election had AV been used in last May's election.
The Lib Dems have set up a new website in support of the YES campaign at www.fairervotes.org.uk. Please sign up and show your support for electoral reform!
