Making the opening keynote speech at the Third European Conference on Mediation at Bourg la Reine, Paris, Diana Wallis Vice-President of the European Parliament said:
"This conference is absolutely timely and the title: Mediation and civil society in Europe - Towards a new mindset could not be more appropriate to the skills and approach we need in Europe at present. When we face huge societal problems, even outright unrest, as a result of the challenges of the financial crisis we need all the skills of mediation to infuse our law-making and politics.
"People have to come together to deal with these issues and that means that there has to be a virtuous circle of transparency, participation and mediation in the tough decision-making we face. The idea in some countries that mediators, ombudsmen or public defenders can help arbitrate between government and governed to demonstrate that law is being made and applied in a fair way is central to keeping public consensus in these difficult times.
"It is high time that mediation was acknowledged as the powerful and enabling political tool of our times; this really is the age of new politics - and not just in the UK!"
