Diana has sent her best wishes to Howard Keal who fought the North Yorkshire Westminster seat of Thirsk & Malton for the Liberal Democrats. The election there had to be postponed until yesterday because of the death of the UKIP candidate just a couple of hours after nominations closed.
Despite the Westminster media insistence that the Liberal Democrats would be squeezed in the seat, the party increased its vote substantially and came from third to second place.
Diana said:
"This was terrific performance by Howard Keal and the Liberal Democrat team in Thirsk & Malton. It's a shame Howard is not to be the local MP as I have known him for many years and he is an excellent local champion for the people of Thirsk and Malton.
"The result, of course, is also an endorsement for the Coalition Government whose candidates achieved over three quarters of the vote. It is early days still but this will give Liberal Democrats great heart, especially given the quite poor performance of the Labour party yesterday."
